Here I share with you a meditation video to help you ground down and release anxiety through work with the first chakra. It was orginally made for our chakra retreat attendees.

I often worry or get anxious when I feel like I can't control something. I'm a control freak! Hahaha! I want to make everything happen but life doesn't work that way. Life requires our effort but it also begs for surrender. It's like a dance. If I place a foot forward, I know there will be some kind of response in the universe. Life asks us to take our steps and then surrender and open our hearts to the response.

In this video you will learn a simple seed syllable that can help you connect to the ground of all being and realize that you are connected and supported. We are supported by people around us and by energy around us. If we can surrender to the energy around us, we will realize that we are held up.

You are always held in LOVE.

Breath, Mantra and Asana. It's all within you!

How does the breath relate to mantras. As I say in the video, I beleive that these powerful sounds and planes of existance are all within us and get expressed into the world through the vehicle of the breath. Just like when we express a yoga pose, we areletting that unfold from the many shapes contained within our bodies.

I am taking a wonderful course on Indian Philosophy right now with Dr. Jeffery Long. After delving into the first books of the Vedas, we can see how all of the eternal truths expressed remain in all of the subsequent books but the wisdom blossoms like a seed that has been nourished. The idea of the Vedas containing all of the truths that then get unpacked through the Vedanta period really resonates with me. I feel that on a spiritual level truth exists and we are constantly diving in and trying to comprehend it more deeply by approaching it from many different angles.

This truth exists within you as well. It is unchanging. All of these practices help you to make manifest the eternal truths within. On the other hand, it's very hard to use the finite (words) to describe the Infinite. At the most profound level, all practices lead you to silence.

Kids learn by Listening

Our kids are listening to us. It's a BIG responsibility. What sounds do we want them to hear? Anya has been listening to me chant well...since she was inside me. I just realized that. Hahaha! As she has listened and watched me practice over the years (She is now 9. We made this video last year.) she has picked up the sounds and words that I use in my practice even when they are complicated and in another language, Sanskrit! Language is an amazing gift to give to children. It stimulates the brain. So, as we grow spiritually, we also grow mentally. These 2 results of using language and chanting help ground us as well as spritually elevate us. This can move us to peace in the here and now for both adults and children.

Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi!

How Kids Respond to Chanting Part 1

Posted by Lisa on June 15, 2017 at 11:25 AM Comments comments (2)

As I prepare for my Family Yoga Kirtan Adventure workshop and Family Yoga retreat, I will bring you this series of blogs about kids and mantra. I have found chanting mantra to be an amazing tool for emotional balance both for my self, my daughter and for my entire family. Most of the time we chant in Sanskrit (Om or AUM is simple and great) but sometimes we chant in English as well, repeating a positive and empowering word or phrase like Peace, Love, Strong, Powerful etc.

This is a clip from an interview by my Sanskrit and mantra teacher, Russill Paul. Leave me some feedback on what your experience has been chanting, singing or practicing yoga with kids. And if you have any questions

Planting Your Seeds

Welcome to Spring! A time for new beginnings and growth of all kinds. Take a moment right now to set an intention and commit to honoring that intention daily. Schedule some time daily to work toward this intention actively, whether that is 5 minutes or an hour. Let me help by watering your intention with a special mantra invoking 10 sacred rivers in India from the ancient Vedic period. You can use this mantra to purify water and any space in which you practice. Listen to this mantra with your fingers in a bowl of water and after the mantra sprinkle the water around your space, your altar and on yourself. It will be a beautiful start to your day and clear the path for your intention.

This video was recorded at the spiritually charged yoga studio, Bhakti Barn Yoga in Glen Ridge, NJ(also in Millburn, NJ) Come learn this mantra with me as part of the Sacred Sound portion of the Advanced Yoga Teacher Training, starting in Sept. 2017!!

How are mantras like affirmations?

Are mantras and affirmations one and the same? They are very similar. In the yoga tradition a mantra is in the language of Sanskrit, this highly charged language of the spirit. There are many styles of chanting that use Sanskrit. It is a language of energy or prana. It is a language that builds life force energy as you speak it. Mantras can serve to connect you to the cosmos, different spiritual planes of existance and ultimately to God or the Divine. This is especially true of the Vedic style of chanting. The chanting of Vedic scripture or the words of the Upanishads. There is Bhakti chanting that is primarily concerned with total surrender to God. To offer up all you are, all of your love to the divine. Then, there is Tantric chanting. This style of chanting is the most like using affirmations to me. Here one syllable sounds are often used that are repeated over and over. When we do this, we are affirming this quality of energy that are already within us that we want to uncover. Thus, we become bathed in that energy. When we go out into the world, we are resonating with that energy and more of that energy is drawn to us. You can also do this with words in English, like affirmations.

Hold your heart and repeat, "I am love" or to embrace your power say "I am powerful." It is really endless. To keep yourself in the magic of the moment, you can say, "I am here." Give yourself a time frame with which to bask in these words. Let them hit your heart and feel their presence.

This type of practice using English can compliment your mantra practie using Sanskrit. The English can bring you within and open your heart, the Sanskrit can connect you to all there is and to the Divine.

Try this simple practice: Repeat an affirmation of your choosing for 5 minutes and then the mantra Om Gam Ganeshaya Namaha for 5 minutes. Do this in the morning and also in the evening before bed.  Or use Sanskrit first and then English. Experiment for yourself. Then, find a pattern and try it for a while, at least a week or set a goal for 2 weeks or a month, possibly 40 days!

Please met me know any feedback from your practice! Namaste!

Power of Chanting Sanskrit Letters

I teach Sanskrit through sounding and writing the letters of Sanskrit, the special shapes called Devanagari. The vibration builds in you as you learn this way. Then, the entire series of sounds of the Sanskrit alphabet are chanted which breaks you free from blockages within each energy center or chakra. These are the vibratory nuances around each chakra center that allow you access to the full scope of your energy. You then bask in your radiance that dispels the darkness for yourself and others. Sanskrit can bring you deep from the simplest of practices with the addition of devotion or bowing down to the divine mystery. It is then, with the powerful combination of effort, intention and grace that you can keep centered and lighthearted within the storms of life. Explore Sanskrit with me through workshops, trainings and even joyful kirtans. Next kirtan in Yonkers January 28th and Sanskrit Training on Feb. 12th in New Rochelle. Why Mantra??

Posted by Lisa on November 23, 2016 at 7:00 PM Comments comments (0)

I have been relying on my mantra practice these last few days and have commited to a 40 day practice of a particular mantra as well as a 40 day practice of something called Nyasa, where you place the Sanskrit letters on places of your body. It's like you are blessing yourself with sacred sound. The actual sounding of these mantras and letters combined with my intention and focus has really amplified their effects. After each session, I am back to my center, grounded and empowered. My intention for Nyasa is to embody my sacred power to be able to share myself from that luminous place. My intention for my mantra practice is for our elected officials to open to the light within all people and work to the wholenes of the planet and all of its beings. Namaste with lots of LOVE!

Here is the sacred Gayatri Mantra. After calling upon the cosmic planes of the earth, atmosphere and heavens, the Gayatri asks that the glorious splendor of the Divine illuminate our meditation and ultimately our lives. May your entire being radiate with the Truth. Namaste and Happy Thanksgiving!

Calm Within The Storm

Namaste Friends,

How can we keep peace within when the world is being turned upside down, when the country and friends and family seem to be in a deep division? After my initial reactions to the elections, I find myself drawing inward more. First, I have to find my center, my connection to Ultimate Reality and then I can take that connection outward. At the basis of the yoga practice is the tenant that we are all sparks of divine light, it is this spark, this luminosity that we all share. Even when hate is being spewed, there is a light underneath. It's trying to shine but its so clouded: with hate, mistrust, fear and the list goes on.

I have thought about things I have never considered and about people that sadly have been left behind in this country. How can this even be when the country has so much wealth? I actually am not sure the President Elect's policy's will help these people but now I think about how I can. How can I be of service to these people and others? This is a call to action for me. To dedicate myself to healing lives, helping others, AND standing up for what I believe is right.

But what I needed and what I continue to need is to come within, every day, every single day, multiple times a day, to remind myself that I can rest in the ground of all existance.  I am part of the universal light of love. To help remind ourselves of this, I am posting an 8 minute video on my members page that is part of my hour long video called "Yoga + Mantra = Sonic Bliss Yoga." In it we go through a series of movements with mantras to ground us into the sacred earth and then flow like water with what we have been given.

Click HERE to go to the members page, sign up to be a member for free and get the 8 minute video and another free video download on the power of Om.

At first, my reaction was through the filter of anger. Now, my actions will be through the filter of love. When you put out hate, hate comes back to you. Your words carry energy. As I relearn these lessons, I pray that my elected leaders in government do the same or I will be resisting powerfully but lovingly. Namaste and Om.

Mantra with Movement and Stillness

Posted by Lisa on September 28, 2016 at 2:30 PM Comments comments (0)

HAPPY FALL! I often get really busy during this season between my daughter being back at school and her activities starting up and a new season of workshop teaching and Sanskrit teaching for me. I keep my energy up with mantra combined with movement. Then, I take that into mantra without movement and finally silent repetition to pure silence. There are so many ways to use sound and mantra to support a full outer and inner life. By nature, we are in fullness always. We are part of universal fullness. We are both supported and guided by a fullness around us and in us. Mantra and movement helps me tap into the fullness principal of the moment. It helps me tap into a power around me, a support, It is really a reminder that I am never alone and always supported in partnership with the divine. In what ways do you use sound or mantra to help you? Leave a comment or a question below and check out the members section. Become a member and get free yoga and mantra videos to help support YOU!!
